Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy:
Bespoke Suits for Unique Game Worlds
Escape Studios ⋆ MA Character & Creature Creation ⋆ Final Project
This projects asks "If this character wore a suit, what would it look like?”. Combining traditional hand-tailoring techniques with 3D clothing creation, I aim to demonstrate the importance of tailoring and textile knowledge in world-building for games.
As a bespoke tailor, I established a project framework that would showcase pattern creation skills across different styles of clothing, whilst also ensuring relevance to the gaming industry by designing for individualistic game-worlds.
Each game-world chosen represents a different tailoring style (with myself as the tailor!).
Tinker: Fallout 4 (vintage 50s)
Soldier: Horizon Zero Dawn (high-fashion)
Spy: James Bond (classic black-tie)
All garments are created for a custom Metahuman's measurements. I hand-drafted patterns to create bespoke jacket and trouser blocks as a base for each outfit.
Garments were created in Marvelous Designer and rendered in game-appropriate environments in Unreal Engine, utilising the LiveSync plugin for a streamlined pipeline. Additional CLO renders show garments in motion to demonstrate their real-world functionality.
For the purpose of this project I excluded ZBrush from the pipeline, choosing not to add accessories. Garments were created as low poly as possible without rigging them to the mesh, as this project primarily demonstrates digital garment construction and storytelling through fashion. If moving these into a game engine, I would use Marvelous’ EveryWear toolkit to weight-paint and rig garments to the base mesh, though I chose not to here in order to simulate garments as accurately as possible.
Tinker: Fallout 4
The Tinker outfit is designed for the Fallout 4 game-world, representing vintage 1950s tailoring.
Inspired by Teddy Girls of the era who repurposed mens' clothing, the Metahuman wears an oversized mens' houndstooth jacket (buttoned traditionally on the right) with a velvet collar, straight cropped jeans, and a bow-tie diamond cut out shirt.

Soldier: Horizon Zero Dawn
The Soldier outfit is designed for the Horizon Zero Dawn game-world, representing high-fashion structural tailoring with a focus on asymmetry, textural contrast, and layering.
The sleeve piece is a reinterpretation of Aloy's signature arm bracer, and the design combines harsh triangular shapes with softer feminine details.
The check suit flannel texture was created using Substance 3D Sampler and refined in Substance Painter.

Spy: James Bond
The Spy outfit is created for a James Bond game-world, with a three-piece suit representing classical 'black-tie' tailoring.
The moire fabric (traditionally used in eveningwear for women) was created in Substance 3D Designer.
The shirt features a 'vanishing tie' created from the front of the shirt itself that disappears into the front seam and collar as a nod to the stealthiness of the spy character. This is also reflected in the moire fabric texture which takes on a different appearance depending on the direction of the light source.
